The 60s were the most important era in the timeline of modern fashion and we’re eternally grateful for the influential decade. Described as being an era of “fashion-obsessed” and “hedonistic cult of the ‘hyper-cool’“, the young adults and teens of England were introduced to the world without war culture. Money earned became their own personal wealth, and with this money, their interest in trend grew. Thus came the generation and era of MOD.
The craze of Mod has now resurfaced amongst the chic trendsetters once again and brands like Fred Perry, Ted Baker, John Smedley, and Pretty Green are giving us exactly what we want.
This gorgeous rich navy Fred Perry knitted polo has a very clean look with the flat rounded collar. We think Blue x Gold is a stunning colour combo and the soft blue merino wool works great with the signature gold laurel. Waffle stitching is also very reminiscent of 60s knitwear so the use of that here is a very smart choice. Merino wool feels incredible as expected. Texture brings out interesting things in a garment and we’re always happy when a brand goes further.
Colour us enamoured with these bright Fred Perry polos! We have not seen something like this for a while. The neon orange stands out brightly (you can leave the visibility jacket home!) and the detailed sleeve trims are something to be excited about! Little details always matter!
The burgundy polo has a more muted tone but makes up for it with the bright cyan stripe on the midsection. These polos inspire a more colourful approach and we think that they would be a great addition to the wardrobe.
Speaking of fun exciting colours we’ve got these wonderful Ted Baker polos in too! The Flyte Geo Print cotton polos are available in a purple navy and lime green hue. They also have this cool diamond plate texture we are so in love with! The ribbed cuffs and collar further implement a retro feel to the polo. It has two buttons on the flat knitted collar for a more secure collar.
The SS17 John Smedly x Pretty Green is definitely a collection to lookout for this spring and summer. Bringing delicious detailings of Mod and combining it with the fashion of now, yes, we would be crazy to leave it out. The symmetrical stripes on the front are also quite evocative of the vintage American Guayabera bowling shirts. We love that the stripes aren’t just flat on the polo, but in fact are engraved in. As a whole, the shirt just looks fantastic!
And, still we are just scratching the surface. Our John Douglas Showrooms on Chestergate continue to grow as the SS17 season continues on so please be sure to come in and have a look around our shop yourself! We look forward to seeing you.
